The Adamawa State Government has reiterated its commitment to enforcing the law against the illegal pasting of political posters on public infrastructure across the state.
The State government said it’s position aimed at protecting public property, preserving the beauty of the state capital, and upholding the rule of law, adding that it’s not about politics rather responsibility.
This is sequel to the Court judgement that imposed a N3 million fine on the All Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate, Ambassador Omar Suleiman Omarana, over an alleged defacement of public property through the indiscriminate placement of campaign posters, he stated.
Addressing journalists in Yola on Thursday night, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Humwashi Wonosikou, said public infrastructure such as flyovers, bridges, public buildings.
Others are streetlights, road medians, and other government facilities were constructed with taxpayers’ money and should not be defaced with campaign posters or other political materials.
According to Wonosikou, the law prohibiting the defacement of public property has long been in existence and applies equally to all political parties, candidates, and residents without exception.
He noted that political actors are free to campaign through approved billboards, flex banners, newspapers, radio, television, digital media, and other lawful platforms, warning that anyone found violating the law would face prosecution.
The Governor’s spokesman said the government’s resolve has already been demonstrated by a recent court judgment in which an ADC governorship aspirant was fined for illegally pasting campaign posters on public infrastructure.
The Chief Press Secretary further disclosed that relevant government agencies had been directed to intensify surveillance across the state to ensure full compliance with the law.
He stressed that the government would continue to protect public assets and enforce the provisions of Section 30(1) of the Adamawa State Environmental Protection Agency Law, 1997, without fear or favour.
