2027 Politics: Is Gov. Abba of Kano Poised to Join APC Against Kwankwaso’s Wishes?

As political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum, Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, is reportedly on the verge of defecting from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sources familiar with the development told POLITICS DIGEST that the governor has concluded consultations with some of his closest political allies and is expected to formally announce his decision in the coming days.

Findings indicate that Governor Yusuf had, over the past several months, made concerted efforts to persuade his political mentor and former governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to join him in the planned defection. However, Kwankwaso was said to have firmly rejected the proposal, insisting on remaining in the NNPP.

Despite repeated attempts, the governor reportedly failed to secure Kwankwaso’s endorsement for the move, POLITICS DIGEST learnt.

A lawmaker in the Kano State House of Assembly, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that Governor Yusuf has already briefed some legislators on his plans.

“The governor has met with some members of the House and informed them of his intention. The Speaker is expected to issue a statement assuring him of full support, irrespective of whatever political decision he takes in the interest of the state,” the source said.

The lawmaker further disclosed that loyalists of Senator Kwankwaso are also preparing to issue a counter-statement reaffirming their allegiance to the former presidential candidate and the NNPP.

“Within the next week, these developments will become clearer. The governor appears to have made up his mind, despite Kwankwaso’s resistance,” the source added.

It would be recalled that speculations had earlier surfaced suggesting that both Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf were planning to defect to the APC. Kwankwaso, however, publicly dismissed the claims.

His recent strong criticisms of the APC have further reinforced the belief among political observers that he has no intention of joining the ruling party.

Efforts to obtain reactions from the spokespersons of both Governor Yusuf and Senator Kwankwaso proved unsuccessful, as calls and text messages sent to them were not responded to as of the time of filing this report.
