denateThe South East Senate Caucus has voiced deep concern over what it calls a “curious and highly suspicious” technical glitch that disrupted JAMB examinations in parts of Lagos and across the entire South East during the last UTME cycle.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Caucus Chairman, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA, Abia South), the lawmakers accused the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) of possibly allowing political bias and parochial interests to infiltrate national education policy and its execution.
“It would be disheartening—and we hope not to imagine it—that a conspiracy could exist with an agenda to deliberately sabotage the future of children from our region,” Abaribe said.
The caucus acknowledged the corrective steps taken by JAMB, especially the decision to reschedule the affected exams and the public apology from its registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede. However, they warned that such an incident must never happen again.
While welcoming JAMB’s admission of fault, the senators insisted the gesture must not serve as a smokescreen to cover any hidden agenda targeting students from the South East.
“The glitch, as bizarre and questionable as it appears, has the potential to erode confidence and diminish national unity among the future generation,” Abaribe said. “Education must never be used as a political weapon. Every child has a right to equal opportunity.”
The caucus stressed that the fact the entire South East was affected raises serious questions and demanded JAMB provide clear answers to ease the fears and frustrations of the region’s people.
They emphasized that education is foundational to any nation’s progress and must remain above politics. “We must pursue a national agenda, not a narrow one that risks tearing apart our unity,” Abaribe declared.
The South East Senate Caucus concluded by demanding firm assurances from JAMB and other national education stakeholders that such a “scandalous glitch” will never be repeated.
