Early life

Abba Kabir was born on 5th January, 1963 in Gaya LGA, Kano State, Nigeria.

He belongs to the the sullubawa Fulani clan which is the rulling class of kano Emirate from the family of Malam Kabiru Yusuf and Malama Khadijatul-Naja’atu.
Education

He had his elementary education at Sumaila primary school between 1968 and 1975.

He then proceeded to Government Secondary School Dawakin Tofa and later moved to Government Secondary school Lautai in Gumel where he completed his secondary education in 1980.

He graduated Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, Adamawa State with a National Diploma (ND) in Civil Engineering in 1985 and a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Water Resources/Environmental Engineering from Kaduna Polytechnic in 1989.

He further obtained a post graduate diploma and master’s degree in business administration.
Career

Yusuf served at Kaduna Environmental Protection Agency(KEPA) between 1989 to 1990 which doing his mandatory National Youth Service Corps.

He also held various positions in Kano State Water Resources Engineering and Construction Agency( WRECA).

From 2009 to 2011, he was named chairman, Governing Board of the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), Ondo State.
Political Career

In 1999, Yusuf was appointed personal assistant to Rabiu Kwankwaso while he was the governor of Kano State and a personal assistant when Kwankwaso became a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2003.

In 2011, he became Commissioner of Works, Housing and Transport when Kwankwaso became the governor of Kano State for a second term.

Abba was appointed as the Personal Assistant to the Minister of Defense from 2003 to 2006.

He became Publicity Secretary of the Forum of Personal Assistants to the Ministers of Federal Republic of Nigeria between 2004 to 2006.

In 2018, he contested to unseat Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje in the State governorship election in 2019 but lost.

In 2022, he switched to the New Nigeria Peoples Party and contested as Governor of Kano State in the 2023 elections.

He was declared winner on 20 March 2023 and was issued his certificate of return on 29 March 2023.

He was subsequently sworn in as Governor of the state in May 2023.
Personal life

Abba Kabir is a Muslim and is married with children.

His grandfather, Danmakwayon Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Bashar was the former District Head of Gaya local government area of Kano State, Nigeria.

His father- in-law is Rabiu Kwankwaso.
