The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has downplayed remarks made by Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate.
Baba-Ahmed, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, accused the coalition of deceiving Nigerians and claimed it lacked the capacity to deliver meaningful development.
He also revealed his intention to once again run alongside Mr. Peter Obi on the Labour Party ticket in 2027.
Reacting in a statement signed by Jackie Wayas, Deputy National Publicity Secretary, the ADC described Baba-Ahmed’s criticism of the opposition coalition as a personal view rather than the official position of any party in the alliance.
Wayas said the coalition’s focus is on forging unity among opposition groups to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s government in 2027.
The party stressed that the coalition is not about individuals but a joint effort involving several political stakeholders determined to put the nation’s interest first.
It also extended a hand of fellowship to Baba-Ahmed, describing him as a man of integrity and urging him to work with the group in shaping a new political direction.
The statement read,“Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed’s assertions are his personal opinions and do not reflect the position of the ADC or its coalition partners.
“Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed is a respected voice who has always stood for integrity and justice. Since the coalition is a collective effort that requires the strength and skills of all patriots, we sincerely hope he comes on board to contribute to this shared vision for a better Nigeria.”
Reiterating its vision of presenting a united front, the ADC called on citizens to support the coalition’s agenda for national transformation.
The party added that, “Nigerians deserve clarity and unity in the pursuit of a better future. Let us rally behind the ADC and rescue Nigeria.”
The ADC noted that the coalition already brings together several prominent leaders such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Senator David Mark, former Minister Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, and Mr. Peter Obi.
According to the party, these leaders came together after wide consultations with the aim of providing effective and people-centered leadership beyond partisan divides.
