2027 Politics: Presidency Says Muslim-Muslim Ticket No Longer Controversial

The Presidency has dismissed concerns surrounding the religious makeup of Nigeria’s leadership, declaring that the Muslim-Muslim ticket—through which President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima came to power in 2023—is no longer a divisive issue ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Thursday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said lingering fears about religious bias or Islamisation had been “firmly dispelled.”

“Christians are living their lives. The president even attended the Pope’s inauguration in Rome. There’s nothing to worry about,” Onanuga said, brushing aside the controversy that surrounded the 2023 election campaign.

He also revealed that most of the individuals being mentioned as potential running mates for Tinubu in 2027 are Muslims, indicating that the religious composition of the ticket is unlikely to change.

“So again, this isn’t an issue,” he added.

Onanuga clarified that President Tinubu would make his final decision on a running mate after the All Progressives Congress (APC) convention in 2026, contingent on accepting the party’s nomination.

“Once INEC releases the timetable, the party convention will hold, and if the president is nominated again, he will choose his running mate,” he said.

The statement appears to be an early signal that the Presidency is confident that the country has moved past the religious divide debate, placing focus instead on continuity and performance as the 2027 election cycle begins to take shape.
