The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Victor Umeh, says the National Working Committee of the Labour Party has ceased to exist.
Umeh stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.
He however said the members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party can convene meetings in the absence of the NWC.

Umeh added that Abure is in his current situation because of desperation.

He said, “NWC does not exist anymore. Members of NEC can come together and convene the meeting. When the tenure of the national working committee expired, they ceased to exist. They cannot convene any meeting on behalf of the party because they do not have a subsisting tenure anymore.
“The statutory members of NEC that were still subsisting called this meeting who were all there to discuss the problems of the party. And in the end, a caretaker committee had to be put in place, because the party had no leadership and had become rudderless.
“And when the caretaker committee was constituted, INEC was duly informed. INEC was fully consulted on how we are going to get out of the mess. And they said there are statutory members of NEC that are still there. They started the process. A caretaker committee was put in place. Before we start doing any work, Abure sued INEC that it stopped recognizing him as the leader of the Labour Party. He was the one that took INEC to court.
“While in the court, the national caretaker committee joined in the suit at the federal high court. Finally the court delivered a judgement and ordered INEC to start dealing with Abure as the chairman of the party.”
