Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, is often referred to as the giant of Africa. However, despite its vast resources and potential, poverty remains a significant challenge in the country. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, about 40% of Nigerians live below the poverty line, which is a cause for concern.
Poverty is not evenly distributed across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Some states have a higher poverty ratio than others, with factors such as unemployment, illiteracy, and inadequate infrastructure playing a significant role. Based on the National Bureau of Statistics’ 2022 Poverty and Inequality in Nigeria report, Sokoto State has the highest poverty ratio in Nigeria, with a poverty rate of 87.73%. This means that almost 9 out of 10 people living in Sokoto state live below the poverty line.
According to Vanguard, Sokoto State, located in the north-western part of Nigeria, is one of the least developed states in the country. The state faces several challenges, including inadequate healthcare facilities, poor road networks, and low literacy levels. These factors have contributed to the high poverty ratio in the state.
Following closely behind Sokoto State are Taraba State, with a poverty rate of 87.72%, and Jigawa State, with a poverty rate of 87.02%. Other states with high poverty rates include Ebonyi State (79.76%), Adamawa State (75.41%), and Zamfara State (70.83%).
It is essential to note that poverty in Nigeria is not just limited to these states. Even in states with a relatively lower poverty ratio, many people still struggle to make ends meet. For instance, Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, has a poverty ratio of 4.50%. However, due to the high cost of living in the city, many residents still struggle to afford basic necessities such as housing, food, and healthcare.
To address the issue of poverty in Nigeria, the government must prioritize human development and implement policies that promote economic growth and reduce income inequality.
